There are a number of tricks and tips to ensure that your prom gown is kept in the best possible condition. Before your prom

Before your prom you need to take steps to prevent any creases or damage occurring to your gown. Most reputable prom dress retailers provides complimentary garment bags making use of their prom dresses. Failing that you can purchase garment bags from supermarkets and many online retailers.

First, hang your dress within a garment bag. You simply must hang it somewhere enough so that the skirt isn't touching the ground (or is only just touching). The place you hang it needs to ideally be a closed space like a wardrobe. You should make sure that the place you choose to hang your prom dress isn't damp and doesn't get exposed to smells (e.g cooking smells).

You might be tempted to try your dress over a few times but try to resist for two reasons. Firstly, prom dresses are very delicate items as well as the more you take them on / off, the greater the risk that beading can become lose and even fall of. Secondly, the longer you have your dress beyond its garment bag, the better the chance is that it will end up damaged by a tear or spill. Prom gowns are made for sitting, standing and talking instead of much else! So make sure not do anything to athletic in yours.

Should spill anything on your gown during prom then don't panic! Remove any excess try not to try and remove/rub the stain because you will only make it worse. Dry cleaners have better chance of removing stains from prom gowns if no-one else has tried first. Most significantly don't worry about it, it is not worth letting a stain on the prom gown spoil your evening!

After your prom

You might wish to have your prom gown cleaned after your prom, so that it in the best condition. You must approach a professional and reputable dry cleaner that has experience dry-cleaning prom dresses. They'll then be able to advise on which process to use.

Or no damage has been caused on your dress (e.g. loose beading) you may wish to have this repaired when you store your dress. Search on the internet and check your telephone book for details of local seamstresses who is able to mend prom dresses

Once your dress has been dry-cleaned you should store it back its garment bag. As prom gowns tend to take up a great deal of space, you may not need to keep it in your wardrobe. You are able to line a large box having a bin line and place your dress inside (the bin liner may help keep moisture from the dress). Carefully package your spice up into a large box and store it beneath your bed, in the spare room or perhaps in the loft.
